Photographers Worth Admiring - Chris Jordan

I discovered Chris Jordan's work while watching Bag It, a Suzan Beraza documentary which follows an average guy Jeb Berrier as he embarks on a quest to figure out all there is to know about plastic and what happens when it is thrown away.

The photograph from Jordan above shows one of thousands of dead seabirds from the island of Midway Atoll. Midway is an island between Asia and North America and lies in what is known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP). The GPGP is an area twice the size of Texas where floating plastic trash collects in a circular current. The seabirds that inevitably arrive in this patch, specifically the Midway Atoll, consume the plastic bits that wash up ashore and into the waters. The birds soon die from starvation, toxicity, and choking.

Why don't we just clean up the plastic? Unfortunately, plastic does not maintain its original shape and begins to break down into very small pieces over time. This sand-like plastic covers the ocean and shores where it becomes nearly impossible to clean up.

So, what can you and I do to help?
First step is to say NO to...

1. Plastic or Paper Bags
2. Bottled Water
3. Soda Cans

You'll save money, help the environment, and protect wildlife! Simply cutting yourself of these three items will help in such a great way.  PLEASE help -- you and I make a big difference.

Until next time,

Nadine
